International Desk:The Mines Ministry has said that the recent overhaul of GST rates will significantly benefit both the housing sector and small-scale enterprises. The key revision includes slashing GST on several mining-related items such as marble and granite from 12% to 5%, a move expected to cut construction costs and provide relief for artisans and rural communities.
Marble and granite, widely used in the housing industry and primarily extracted in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka, will now be cheaper under the new regime. The ministry added that the lower GST on lime bricks and stone inlay work will further reduce costs for low-cost housing projects, particularly in rural areas. Essential items such as brass kerosene stoves and other basic cooking tools are also expected to become more affordable, supporting low-income families.
In addition, handicrafts made of brass, copper alloys (electroplated with nickel or silver), and aluminium will now carry lower price tags, directly benefitting artisans and micro enterprises across the country.
The ministry also highlighted that the GST rate on multimodal transport of goods within India has been cut from 12% to 5% (with restricted credit). This is expected to ease logistics for the mining and minerals industry, particularly iron ore, which often requires long-distance movement.
Starting September 22, most goods and services will attract either 5% or 18% GST, while a special 40% rate will apply to ultra-luxury goods and tobacco-related products.
