DB Officer Russell Awarded for Busting Kidnapping Gang

Staff Reporter: Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Md. Abu Ahsan Russell of the Cyber and Special Crime (North) Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been awarded at the DMP’s July 2025 monthly crime meeting.
He received the recognition for his outstanding role in arresting three members—including the ringleader—of a gang involved in kidnapping passengers and extorting ransom money.
According to DMP sources, the gang used to lure passengers into private cars on highways, blindfold and tie them up in isolated areas, and demand ransom from their families through mobile banking services such as bKash and Nagad.
In a recent incident near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the abductors extorted Tk 243,700 through bKash from the victim’s family.
With the help of technology and intelligence sources, SI Russell swiftly identified and arrested the gang’s key members — Manik Mia, Sohag, and Helal Mia. A private car used in the abduction and six mobile phones were seized during the operation.
In recognition of his professionalism, courage, and effective crime detection, SI Md. Abu Ahsan Russell was named DMP’s Best Officer of the Month (July 2025).
